Spanish Baroque Corpus Christi, late 17th century

A striking and devotional Spanish Corpus Christi from the late 17th century, carved in wood and retaining its original polychromy, mounted on its period wooden cross and set within an original gilded niche. The work displays the characteristic emotional realism of the Iberian Baroque: a deeply modelled ribcage, expressive wounds, finely carved beard and the distinctive Spanish knotted perizonium.
