Description
A finely carved wooden figure of Saint Anthony of Padua, depicted holding the Christ Child, attributed to Spain, late 17th – early 18th century. The sculpture shows strong devotional character with elegant drapery, gentle facial expressions and well-balanced proportions, typical of Iberian religious carving of the Baroque period.
Carved in lindenwood (limewood), the figure retains a warm, aged surface with a beautiful natural patina. The Child is shown seated on Saint Anthony’s arm, holding a small orb, symbolising Christ’s sovereignty. The sculpture is in good, honest condition, with minor age-related wear and small losses consistent with its age and devotional use.
An attractive and collectible example of Spanish devotional sculpture, suitable for both private collections and gallery display.
