Description
A rare and expressive Early Gothic limestone sculpture of the Virgin and Child, attributable to France and dating to the first quarter of the 15th century (ca. 1400–1425). The sculpture reflects the transition from the refined International Gothic style toward a more naturalistic and emotionally resonant devotional language.
The Virgin is depicted with a calm, introspective expression, her gently inclined head and softly modelled facial features conveying a sense of humility and spiritual tenderness. The Christ Child is held closely against her body, creating an intimate and human interaction that was characteristic of early 15th-century French devotional sculpture. The restrained, lyrical drapery and quiet, contemplative mood place the work firmly within the French Gothic tradition of this period.
The back of the sculpture is left largely flat and roughly worked, indicating that the figure was originally intended for placement in a niche or architectural setting, such as a church interior or private devotional altar. Traces of surface wear and abrasion suggest the sculpture was once polychromed, as was customary for stone devotional figures of this period.
Despite losses and age-related wear, the sculpture retains a strong spiritual presence and sculptural integrity, making it a compelling survivor of early 15th-century French Gothic religious art.
