Dimensions: approx. 16 cm high x 17,5 cm wide, late 19th century

This rare and large bitong (brush pot) is masterfully crafted and covered with natural shagreen (ray skin), an exclusive material highly prized in China for its luxurious texture and durability. The surface displays a warm amber tone with an intricate, natural pebble-like pattern unique to shagreen, giving the piece a refined yet tactile presence. The softly lobed, fluted form adds elegance, while the interior is finished in deep red lacquer, providing a striking visual contrast.

Shagreen-covered scholar’s objects were symbols of wealth, taste, and scholarly refinement, often commissioned by elite patrons. This example, dating from the late Qing to early Republic period, reflects the sophisticated material culture of the Chinese scholar’s studio. Its size, rarity, and exceptional preservation make it an important collector’s piece, equally at home in a serious Chinese art collection or as a statement decorative object.

The object is in good condition with wear around some of the corners.
