A highly unusual and rare Chinese coconut cup from the Kangxi period (1662–1722). Finely carved in relief with the classic “Three Friends of Winter” (pine, bamboo, and plum) an enduring motif in Chinese art symbolizing resilience, perseverance, and integrity.
The deep brown surface of the coconut shell has been carefully worked to bring out detailed textures of pine needles, bamboo leaves, and blossoming plum branches. The natural grain of the material enhances the contrast and warmth of the decoration, creating a piece that is both rustic and refined.
Such coconut cups were admired by scholars and collectors in the late Ming and Qing dynasties as objects of taste and literati culture, often treasured alongside bamboo carvings and other scholar’s desk items. Very few have survived in such excellent condition.
