Late Gothic Wooden Relief of Saint Bartholomew (c. 1500–1550) – Original Polychromy – 37.6 cm

Description
A rare and expressive Late Gothic wooden relief depicting Saint Bartholomew, carved circa 1500–1550. The apostle holds his distinctive attribute — the flaying knife — allowing for clear identification. The carving displays classic Late Gothic characteristics: deeply carved cascading drapery, a finely modelled and expressive face, and compact proportions typical of Flemish and German workshop production. Traces of original polychromy and gilding remain, forming a beautifully aged patina.

The relief likely originated as part of a larger altarpiece (retable) comprising all twelve apostles. Such ensembles were produced in specialist workshops in the Low Countries or Southern Germany, and surviving individual panels of this type are scarce today. The work is mounted on a later velvet-covered backing panel (19th or early 20th century), reflecting its preservation as a devotional or collector’s object.

Rarity
Depictions of Saint Bartholomew from this early period are exceptionally uncommon. The saint was carved less frequently than other apostles, complete apostle sets were rarely separated, and Late Gothic reliefs retaining polychromy are increasingly difficult to find. Most comparable works remain in museum or ecclesiastical collections. A 16th-century Bartholomew of this scale and quality is therefore highly collectible and rarely seen on the market.

Condition
Good condition for its age of over 500 years. Historic losses to polychromy; minor age-related chips, especially to the beard and drapery; structurally stable. Velvet backing is later and not original.
