Japanese Bronze Water Dropper – Shishi Form with Shishi Finial | Meiji Period (1868–1912)

This rare Japanese bronze water dropper is modelled in the form of a Shishi (guardian lion-dog), a powerful protective symbol in Japanese and Chinese art. Measuring 6.5 x 8 cm, it is a finely cast example from the Meiji period, with a second, smaller Shishi perched proudly on the lid.

Water droppers (suiteki) were indispensable tools in traditional calligraphy and painting, allowing the artist to add precise amounts of water to the inkstone. Beyond their utility, they were often made as miniature works of art — and this sculptural double-Shishi design is especially scarce.

Comparable examples of bronze Shishi-form water droppers are preserved in several museum collections, underscoring its rarity and appeal to collectors of Japanese metalwork. The piece shows a warm, natural patina from age.

Dimensions: 6.5 cm high x 8 cm wide
Provenance: Private European collection
Condition: Good, with minor surface wear consistent with age

A true collector’s item — combining Meiji-period craftsmanship, functional artistry, and the protective power of the Shishi.
