A refined 19th-century Dutch winter scene by Carl Eduard Ahrendts, showing villagers on a frozen lake, a sled and a koek-en-zopie stall set beneath a luminous sky with cottages at left. The composition balances atmosphere and detail in the Romantic manner for which the artist is known.
About the artist Ahrendts was a The Hague painter celebrated for finely detailed summer and winter landscapes, coastal and town views. His work shows the influence of the B.C. Koekkoek circle in subject and arrangement. He was active throughout the 19th century and is recorded 1822–1898.
Condition Very good condition with stable age-consistent craquelure; fresh colour and clear varnish. Period gilt and gesso frame with minor wear, ready to hang.
