17th Century Ecce Homo – Old Master Oil on Canvas (laid on panel)

European School, circa 1620–1680

A powerful and deeply moving 17th century devotional painting depicting Ecce Homo, the moment Christ is presented to the people after the Flagellation. The composition captures the profound humanity and quiet suffering of Christ, surrounded by his tormentors, rendered with expressive faces and strong emotional intensity typical of Baroque religious art.

Painted in oil on canvas and later laid down on panel, as often seen with early works to ensure structural stability over the centuries. The rich red drapery, luminous halo and sensitively modelled anatomy of Christ create a striking visual contrast against the cooler background tones. The intimate scale of the composition suggests the work was intended for private devotion or a small oratory.

Presented in a beautiful period frame, which complements the painting’s character and enhances its presence. The frame is included as part of the work.
