Her foresight and initiative culminated in one of the most famous escapes in European history: she devised the plan to smuggle Hugo out in a book chest. Grotius himself immortalised Maria’s courage in his poem Silva ad Thuanum (1621), describing her as both his companion in adversity and a heroine of endurance, in the tradition of classical role models. Writers such as Joost van den Vondel and physicians like Johan van Beverwijck praised her, and later historians and playwrights elevated her to an icon of moral integrity.

By the 18th century, Maria van Reigersberch had become a patriotic symbol. Her story was included in schoolbooks, songs, and plays as an example of civic virtues.
